Let’s start this post with a look at the Bible – Colossians 3:23-24 in particular:

(23) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, (24) since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

While being “Compassionate in relationships” is a really tough principle for me to follow well, the principle of being “Excellent in work” seems natural and easy. I think it’s that Dutch Protestant upbringing which instilled a strong work ethic in me.

But is that it—just doing one’s best?
Compare verse 24 above to the corporate world, where the culture reinforces financial and promotion-oriented rewards, and nothing spiritual at all.
The conclusion?
WHATEVER JOB you’re in, a way to serve God at your work is to do your best—not for earthly reward but for a heavenly inheritance! Now that’s something that can motivate us regardless of what the boss says, what the culture is like, independent of promotion or financial reward.
